A Case Study in Saudi Arabia

In 2023, BES and ARtGlass Group teamed up to build an augmented reality experience in the heart of Saudi Arabia. We created the world’s first experiential reality tour of a UNESCO World Heritage Site: Hegra, the ancient city of the Nabataeans.

Using AR glasses, the tour is a guided experience that showcases the great sandstone tombs of Hegra and explores elements of the Nabataean society, architecture, history, geography, and even archaeological mysteries.

BES developed the creative approach and brought the ancient world to life by building 3D animation, virtual reality elements, motion graphics, 360-degree photography and video, and traditional photography. We traveled to Saudi Arabia to film and photograph the site, and filmed actors in our studio using live-keying techniques to incorporate them into a 360-degree, 3D environment in the glasses. We then used a wide variety of editing programs, including After Effects, Premiere, Photoshop, Illustrator, Blender, and ARtGlass’ TourBuilder to build each digital tour stop.

…and then we did it all again…in Arabic.

The finished tour runs approximately 45 minutes, consists of over 17 stops and sub-stops, and is composed of thousands of individual assets.
